Overview for Directors
You
should read all of the posted NAST materials.
However, a summary of key points is provided here as a checklist of
essentials.
1. In your flyer and tournament ads, make sure
that the tournament is identified as an open (no divisions) NAST
satellite. Specify whether 5, 6, 7 or 8
rounds. Clear the tournament with the
NSA as for any sanctioned tournament.
Post to cross-tables.com, if possible.
2. On the day of the tournament, let players
know whether pairings for any rounds after round 4 will be adjusted for no
repeats. The final round should allow any
number of repeats regardless of previous round pairings. Also, there is to be no Gibsonizing.
3. Use the pairings tables provided for the
number of players you have. Remember to
try hard to have an alternate/standby player so that byes can be avoided.
4. As in most tournaments, standings are
determined first by win/loss, then by cumulative scoring margin. Except for 5-round satellites, the final
round is King-of-Hill, 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, etc.
Round 5 is pure Swiss based on Round 4 standings. Pure Swiss involves grouping all players with
the same W/L record, dividing the groups in two halves, and matching the first
half against the second half (in each w/l group) in order of the standings
within each half. Starting at the top,
if a W/L group has an odd number of players, move the top player from the next
group up. Repeat as necessary. See example on next page.
5. Use the prize tables provided for determining
number of qualifiers and prize payouts.
The prize payouts are a guide, to be adjusted as necessary if you
don't/can't meet the intended expense goals, if you change the entry fee, or if
you have local sponsorship. The
mandatory items are the $20 per player carryover to the Final Event and the
number of qualifiers.
6. After the tournament, mail the carryover
amount to Steve Pellinen,
