Overview for Directors
You should read all of the
posted NAST materials. However, a
summary of key points is provided here as a checklist of essentials.
1. In your flyer and tournament ads, make sure that the
tournament is identified as a six round, open (no divisions) NAST satellite. Clear the tournament with the NSA as
for any sanctioned tournament.
Post to cross-tables.com, if possible.
2. On the day of the tournament, remind players that in the
interest of consistency across North America this first year, the pairings for
Rounds 5 and 6 will not be adjusted for repeats. It is thus possible for players to play the same opponent up
to three times. This may be
modified in future years, but that's the way it is for now. Also, there is no Gibsonizing.
3. Use the pairings tables provided for the number of players
you have. Remember to try hard to
have an alternate/standby player so that byes can be avoided.
4. As in most tournaments, standings are determined first by
win/loss, then by cumulative scoring margin. Round 6 is King-of-Hill, 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, etc. Round 5 is pure Swiss based on Round 4
standings, not adjusted to avoid repeats (repeats are allowed). Pure Swiss involves grouping all
players with the same W/L record, dividing the groups in two halves, and
matching the first half against the second half (in each w/l group) in order of
the standings within each half.
Starting at the top, if a W/L group has an odd number of players, move
the top player from the next group up.
Repeat as necessary. See
example on next page.
5. Use the prize tables provided for determining number of
qualifiers and prize payouts. The
prize payouts are a guide, to be adjusted as necessary if you don't/can't meet
the intended expense goals, or if you have local sponsorship. The mandatory items are the 40 percent
carryover to the Final Event and the number of qualifiers.
6. After the tournament, mail the 40 percent carryover amount
to Steve Pellinen, 4330 Vernon Ave S, Minneapolis MN 55436. Make checks out to NAST. Also, provide the names, ratings and
ranking/seed (in your satellite) of the players who qualify.
