Twin Cities, MN June 2004 Tournament (Jun 26-27, 2004)

Director's Report

Division Winners We had 68 players in 5 divisions from 8 states (46 Minnesotans). Eleven participants were unrated, playing in their very first tournament! Our newfound venue, the Days Inn Airport across the street from the Mall of America, was a big success. We'll be there again in November.

We experimented this time with having 5 directors, each playing as well as directing a division other than our own. We shared the preparatory duties, although Tim Adamson, with his superior experience, remained the guiding force. Steve Pellinen had to drop out of the directorial lineup, as he's suffering back problems, but Myron Wilson, who resides in Florida but summers in Minnesota, filled in for him (thanks, Myron). The other directors were Sue Hoehn, Dawn Gewecke, and myself. As usual, none of the these workers drew pay for their efforts. The computers, of course, took care of the majority of the word judging... and the directors were able to play with a minimum of disruption.

Sam Kantimathi participated in this tournament, and brought with him a supply of his new Pocket Sam Timers. We purchased 15 of them to give as prizes for high play and high word in each division, and also for one of the placement prizes. They were a big hit!

We also gave away a Scrabble beach towel, to honor the grand opening of the new light rail system in Minneapolis this weekend. It's called the HIAWATHA line, so we had a prize for the high word using the most letters from the name Hiawatha.

The full results are reproduced below. These are based on the wall charts (hopefully, free of errors!)

Thanks to all participants, directors, helpers and groupies for a memorable weekend!
