Twin Cities, MN 2005 "Speed" Tournament (Jun 25-26, 2005)

Carol's Report

Well, the first ever Club 42 Speed Tournament is over! I don't know about the rest of you, but I went to bed as soon as I got home, and slept for nine hours. Whew!

Lisa Odom won the event, hands down. I don't have access to the complete results [Note: full results are printed below], but I can report what I remember. I believe she won 8 of 10 games, and her spread was somewhere in the 900s. Oh, and her first game of the day, she scored over 600 points! (Lisa, can you tell us more about that game? I know it was the fastest game of round one!)

Steve Pellinen took 2nd, and I placed 3rd. Lisa, Steve and I were seeded 1st, 2nd and third, and that's how we placed.

There were only 19 players there, but it felt like quite a crowd. And being at the Bridge Center, in some ways, it just felt like one big, long club session! It was nice to have Brad from LaCrosse with us, and three St. Cloud players, Susan, Char and Kaia. Kaia is only 16, and this was her very first tournament. She had the highest play of the event, a triple-triple for 113 points.

Fortunately, a couple of players had figured out how to reset the various digital timers for 15 minutes, and they helped others get their clocks set up. (next time you play at club, make sure the clock you are using is not still set for 15 minutes/player!) Eight people -- just under half of participants -- never went over their 15 minutes. We didn't allow going more than 5 minutes over, and there was only one game that came close to that limit... Angelina, who went nearly 5 minutes over, but still won her game in spite of the 50-point penalty.

The potluck supper was a success; yum, yum, yum!

Prizes were awarded for the first five places, also for best finish in relation to seed, which was won by Mary Krizan. We also had a prize for highest-scoring bingo and non-bingo plays (Kaia and Angelina), and for the several highest-scoring plays using the letters in each of the names Tim, Jim, and Lisa. All prizes were donated by the participants, and there was quite a range of interesting merchandise!

Here's how the money adds up:

19 fees at $25.00 each = $475
Additional donations, so far = $175
That's $650
minus $100 for the room rental = $550

I'd like to leave this fund open until October 1st, for any additional donations. We should ultimately have at least $600 to split between Lisa, Tim and Jim!

Here are the names of those who donated, even though they couldn't attend: Joe Gaspard, Steve Bachman, Janice Kaye and Steve Lent. And those who paid more than their entry fee: Sue Hoehn, Walt Blue, Steve Pellinen, Lisa Odom.

Some people paid me in cash yesterday, and, since I was multi-tasking at the time, I didn't mark down the names of all those who put in extra. So please, if you paid more than your entry fee, and your name isn't listed here, let me know. I'd like to give credit to everyone who made donations.

Thanks everyone, for making this a fun and profitable event! As usual, it was a cooperative effort, with virtually everyone pitching in. Special thanks to Steve Pellinen for doing all the pairings (with help from various assistants), Steph for getting the potluck together, all those who donated prizes, and the many who stayed after to help clean up the room.

Your adoring director,
Carol

A Report from Lisa

It was a fun day for me. It all started out with that 604 game, a wonderment from rack one: sCHERZO for 110. Thanks, Sue H, for being such a good sport!

Really, it all came down to the last game. Steve drubbed me in game 5, and then we tied in game 9 (I had to fight hard for that one). So we played again in round 10 and I drubbed him back. Such a perfect symmetry to go 1-1-1 against my better half.

Thanks to everyone who played and/or donated. I appreciate it!

Ciao for now,
Lisa
