Hi all,
Steve has been avidly watching the Tour de France bicycle race for which I have sometimes been a captive audience. The main Scrabble word recycled throughout the 21-day duration is PELOTON–the name for the main cluster of riders in the race. Then there is he BREAKAWAY–the much smaller group of riders who take a risk by shooting out ahead of the main group. There is also much talk of the MAILLOT JAUNE* or YELLOW JERSEY which is worn by the overall leader in the race. In English, MAILLOT is also a common term for a woman’s one-piece bathing suit. I was amused by the commentator’s mention of ENTENTE CORDIALE* describing the informal alliances between riders or teams since ENTENTE was played and challenged a few weeks ago at club. There is a also much talk of COLS, the French name for a mountain pass since much of the race takes place in the Pyrenees or the Alps.

Hi all,
Congrats again to Vincent Van Dover who went undefeated (8-0) at the Summer Kickoff Tournament. The community room at Doobie’s church was spacious, light-filled, and well-equipped. In addition to running the tournament like butter, Doobie treated us to a tasty lunch: pulled pork sandwiches, Greek pasta salad, watermelon, tiramisu, lemonade, margaritas, and ice cream sundaes.
The farmer’s market was fun and included cookies, bars, raspberry jam, spiced nuts, potted plants, etc. After selling the rest of the leftover cookies at Tuesday night club, we raised about $128 in total for the Word Cup. A fond farewell to Richard Johnson who is heading back to Texas this weekend. We enjoyed having you at club and hope you pass this way again soon.

Woke up in the middle of Monday night and the Burt Bacharach/Hal David Gershwin Prize tribute at the White House was playing on TV.
