My first Mallard was spotted in my yard?! Yes, that’s true. True in the sense that it was the first one checked off on my life list. I was still counting only “yardbirds” at this time.

This first pair was scouting our property as a possible nesting site. This despite the fact that other than small bird baths, there is no water in our yard (there is a very small pond across the street). The scouting part has happened a few times now, in fact, but so far we’ve had no takers.

XXXXI photographed these two feeding males at Como Lake in St. Paul.
