Lifebird #27 - A “Lookie-lou” and his mate

Mallard

My first Mallard was spotted in my yard?! Yes, that’s true. True in the sense that it was the first one checked off on my life list. I was still counting only “yardbirds” at this time.

This lifer pair was scouting our property as a possible nesting site. This despite the fact that other than small bird baths, there is no water in our yard (there is a very small pond across the street). The scouting part happened a few times, in fact, but in the end they decided against sharing this city lot with us. Probably a wise decision. Our dog Katie is friendly, but she has her limits.

I photographed the two feeding males pictured at the top of this page at Como Lake in St. Paul. The lousy image of a pair of ducks-out-of-water used below is of the “lookie-lous” of the post’s title. Below that, cute and fuzzy ducklings!
